The concept I have heard floated is that an exit package would be offered to those whose age combined with years of service exceeded a particular number. Thus, they would be able to replace high cost (both salary and medical care) pilots with cheaper, experienced, but younger pilots that will now, unfortunately, be flooding the market.
As to age numbers, as of late June, Netjets has more than 300 pilots over the age of 64.
Not sure I buy the hiring flood portion of this endeavor. Usually, early outs are not offered to then turn around and hire...
