Well... since SWA says they're looking at the A220, they're probably just exploring the concept of big RJ's that could make a go in markets too small for a 73.
Or it could be that southwest sees the 73’s not being around forever, because it’s not a modern plane and they’d like their airline to outlast the aircraft.
