I'm not sure it was strictly because they couldn't afford them. They sold the planes to Skywest in order to gain a cash infusion to keep the operation running.
Maybe having the cash on hand was to avoid something in the short term like bankruptcy? Which doesn't bode well with investors.
I'm no economist, but it sounds like a smart move.
