An example of this would be state-run airlines, controlled by government agencies and committees rather than CEOs and private executives. I don't think anyone in America is calling for that

What you are complaining about is a carbon tax, which is fundamentally a market-based solution to the problem, not to mention the fact that the government has been taxing us for 250+ years. If you think a mere tax is socialism then I guess you'd have to add George Washington to the list of socialists for his role in putting down the Whiskey Rebellion and enforcing an excise tax that farmers did not want to pay.

The advantages and disadvantages of carbon pricing are up for debate, but it certainly is not socialism since it literally relies on market forces to work
