I don't think that is right. I've asked both DALPA Benefits Committee, and Company Benefits folks, and they all say that both Basic and Optional Life Insurnace will pay due to death in private flying.
The summary plan descptions, restrictions and exlusions sections states that Basic won't pay for death at the hands of the beneficiary, and the Optional won't pay for sucide within 2 years, and death at hands of beneficiary.
Now the private pilot accident insurance does have some restrictions and limitations releated to the type of flying and it must be in a properly licensed aircraft, with it then defines as:
Properly licensed private aircraft or military aircraft do not include: An aircraft certified by the FAA as experimental, restricted or limited, or as a prototype aircraft An aircraft being used for waivered flying, crop dusting, test flying, flight instruction or participation in speed or endurance contests An aircraft being used for stunt flying (other than performing legal aerobatic flying specifically approved by the FAA for such purposes and in an area and at an altitude approved by the FAA); while flying for hire, except for Delta or any of its subsidiaries; or while flying in violation of any FAA regulations An aircraft that is not equipped, inspected, certified or maintained in accordance with FAA regulations
