Because the two things are completely unrelated. Sun Country has an operation in place that Southwest would have to invest a lot of money and time to replicate. It is much easier to buy an existing business than to build it yourself.
Please everyone, don’t even bother with these dreamers 👆. I’ve seen this rumor propaganda going on for the last +10 years. Southwest had multiple opportunities to buy out Sun Country, when it actually made sense. Now in this moment of time these “rumors” spark up again, oh please. Mergers have led to nothing but financial issues. Ask American, United, Alaska. The only successful merger I’ve seen in my years was northwest and delta. Both which, filed for bankruptcy and received government financial assistance from the feds.
