The money that he is paying back is from the training pay that he continued to receive after IOE. His training pay should have terminated after his IOE, and then the next month's paychecks should have paid him for the first month's flying. That's where the month with no pay comes in - between IOE completion and regular pay start.

I was paid for December twice. My training pay should have stopped on Nov. 31 when I completed OE. It did not and I received training pay in December even though I was flying the line. My Jan. paychecks were for my flying in December; so essentially big D paid me twice in December. When I informed them of the error they let me deduct $300 from the next 9 paychecks to pay them back.
