It has more to do with the company’s financial situation more than the furloughed pilots’ financial situation. It’s a loan or grant or whatever they are calling it from the government that pays all pilots, furloughed or not. Someone feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. If the company doesn’t take the money then the company has to pay the pilots that are currently not furloughed. If they do take the money then the government pays the pilots that are not furloughed and the pilots that are. It saves the company money because they aren’t technically paying any of us.
