When fast food costs are 35% wages. Profits are 5%. Doubling wages ($15 per hour) would take another 35%, making wages 70% of costs. That would turn the 5% profits into 30% loss. How long will those restaurants, whether company or franchisee owned, continue to operate?

”But they deserve it”. “Just take it out of those obscene profits.” “Just raise prices.” (I especially love that last one. Just raise prices on the seats airlines sell, to make them profitable. What’s the problem with that?)

Economics and company financials just don’t get very far on rhetoric.
