We can't base every policy decision off of the narrow interest of the 50 seat airline business. Furthermore, they've been on the ropes for years anyway, the airlines always want more efficient and customer friendly aircraft, regardless of oil price. American retired the MD80s during Trump's reign of gold and glory because they were more expensive than other aircraft to operate.
Gonna chime in to say retrofitting the shady eighty's with ADS-B out (see government policy & regulation) at a million smackeroos a pop may have had more to do with their retirement than guzzling gas, although I'm sure that didn't help.
