In all Western economies, a modern airliner is sold for about 1/2 the cost. The other half of the cost is subsidized by the general taxpayers. The whole entire transportation system is HEAVILY subsidized, starting with the cash price everyone pays for oil. For example, in the US, truckers pay a fee every year to use the highway system. That fee covers about 10% of the actual cost for upkeep of the highway system due to trucks using the system.
