What customers prefer only becomes an issue when they vote with their feet and affect the bottom line. They may rather fly on an Airbus, but they will purchase a ticket on a 737 if it’s cheaper. The biggest issue for any airline is customer service and not a Ford/Chevy debate. Those in charge of aircraft purchasing have determined that they can make more money with the Max rather than the Neo. The 737 is an outdated turd, but the Max sips fuel just like the Neo would, and it is going to be the major fleet type in our domestic market for a long time.
