Company rates are hardly the cheapest rates staying at the hotel on any given night. The only time the average customer is paying more than company rates for the hotel is during holidays and maybe a busy weekend or two. That's why the contract is there, so rates stay the same and predictable all year for that airline. Pilots thinking that is just a way for hotels to get rid of "extra rooms" is wrong. It works for both parties, we keep the hotels filled during slow periods for them and they block off rooms for us when it is busy.
That mumbling you think you heard is nothing but you projecting your own self image.
Not to mention hotels love us now. Can’t count how many “thank you for staying here” comments I have gotten since COVID.
