The double pay for all of those things only gets expensive if you aren’t properly manned. I see such double pay penalties as financial incentive to actually carry adequate reserves - and THAT is where the company gets the flexibility to run the airline. They currently believe they have the flexibility to just plus up on premium pay to cover IROPs, holidays and other anomalies (e.g. covid vaccination NFLYs), but I think this pending fourth holiday disaster of evidence of their error.
Management can’t stomach the idea of reserve pilots being “paid to sit at home”... some day they may wake up to the fact that that is actually a necessity for schedule integrity.
