Always cracks me up when people think they’re so superior to their peers. Maybe green FOs don’t quite have a full grasp on MELs, but the vast majority of professional pilots do (even many CFIs).

You would be surprised. I've seen many initial and recurrent/upgrade checks where the MEL is brought out and the Capt given a maintenance situation involving a deferrable item. As it progresses to a point of checking the in-depth knowledge of the MEL process the applicant's lack of knowledge becomes obvious.
Go look at the data from ASAP and VDRP on MEL issues as well.
