A very important point to remember in regards to your FAA Medical is that you don't want to get one from someone who is stringent and you don't want to discuss any medical problems you may be having with the FAA designated doctor. As my brother always said, " If I want to have a problem checked I go see another doctor, if I want my FAA medical then I go to a guy I know will pass me ".
When I was still in the States I went to the home of my FAA doctor, where he kept a small office. My previous application form was already there to reference for filling out the new one. I filled it out, he took my blood pressure, did the old style voice hearing check, and asked me how I felt. He would occasionally ask how my vision was holding up and lately we had started the EKG. Of importance is that he sends the EKG through a screener in Texas who looks at it before it goes to the FAA. That way any abnormalities can be caught before it is too late. At then end of this we would sit down and have a glass of wine or two on his back porch overlooking the golf course.
That is how you want your FAA medical to go. You don't want an astronaut physical or someone who does the latest and greatest vision and hearing tests.
