The cost savings to the company by making it a theater qual is not going to be all that great. Most pilots will end up getting the qual because they would love to fly the trips. The company gains some productivity by being able to use a pilot sooner after completing IOE. They lose some cash as greenslips would increase if most reserves lack the qual. In the end your not going to leverage a 5 million cost savings into 50 million in other improvements. We have tried that before with no success. The request by the company to allow a increase in the ALV on the MD88 for two months is a good example. Our demands just ended up screwing a lot of pilots in or scheduled for training at the time.
Once the company gets rid of the IOE backlog there would be no real savings at all. Given the rumblings that the glacial pace of vaccinations is going to kill Europe for the summer and the projected flying is going to be adjusted down they might not even care at this point.
