They could have kept Compass afloat by not pulling the remaining Compass flying by the first week of April 2020. It's hard for a regional to exist if you pull the flying that it does for you.
Compass was on their last legs anyways. Their Delta flying was already being wound down and AA flying wouldn’t have lasted much longer since AA was looking to consolidate their regional flying as well (cancelled contracts with Trans States and ASA/ExpressJet).
