One thing to note, is RJ's operating at mainline gives the company access to the GTF long range RJ's, i.e. ERJE2, MRJ, etc. That revenue premium alone would cover any cost difference in pilot salaries.
If only mainline had an airplane that had 3500+ mile range capable of etops and trans Atlantic flying with 50 mor people then the RJ as well as short field quiet operations and extremely profitable short distance domestic capability as well.....all while burning less then an RJ.....
Oh wait WE DO! the a220 can do all an rj does with more capacity more frieght and more profits with better customer experience thats has been unrivaled. All with the capability of flying across the pond, west coast to hawaii and into extreme lucrative markets like London city non stop.
