Simple, part of sitting left seat at a regional is getting the guy sitting next to you ready to upgrade, hint this is why the FAA is changing “Command leadership” to “command leadership mentorship” AC 121-43. And having a background teaching people and understanding what the laws of primacy, intensity etc are and understanding what the hierarchy of human needs is goes a long way towards helping new hires become competent CA’s. Your FO isn’t going to learn by you yelling at them like an impotent drill instructor, and they aren’t going to learn if you force them to fly exactly your way (I’m looking at some of the micromanaging lifers with that one).

Now I’m not saying you should be instructing your FO’s, far from that. But you should be allowing them to make decisions and get more comfortable and confident in their job, not walking on eggshells around you.
