If you think that you can get the check airman position, and most importantly, THAT YOU WANT TO DO IT, then definitely apply for it. If your company is anything like XJT, they are very selective of their LCAs - its not just a "well I want it for my resume, so I guess that I'll do it" kind of thing. Took me years and 5 tries before finally getting the position.
While it can be stressful at times, it is also very rewarding.
And, yes, also get the degree.
