Twelve hours isn't a lot of time to recover from the flight over. That being said, many guys prefer a 24 hour layover to a 48, since it tends to be a more efficient use of their time.
Commuting can make for a long day. Although nearly all of the 767ER trips are commutable, your best career move at Delta is probably to move to the New York area when you're a new hire.
