The vax isn't mandatory here either, and won't be. Management just stated intent for marketing purposes based on their perception of the market. It's the same as their diversity rhetoric, core4, boom jet, electric airplane, green initiatives, etc. Some of the stuff kirby mentioned publicly, such as hiring based on sex or race, is illegal anyway. It's sales puffery.
The union hasn't weighed in in the company's announcement yet either except to say further negotiations are necessary. Why would United promise such a thing to the woke public without first determining its cost with the ALPA? Seems like it would give ALPA a pretty big bargaining advantage. Maybe it's because they have zero intent on following through. It's all smoke and mirrors to make money.
Per the MEC
Pilots who plan to remain unvaccinated should contact their Chief Pilot's Office to determine their next steps. Under EEOC rules, the Reasonable Accommodation process will apply to employees who can prove they have a sincerely held religious belief or bona fide medical reason for not getting the vaccine. Reasonable Accommodations must be addressed one pilot at a time and are not governed by the UPA
This affects less than 10% of the pilots, ALPAs not going to spend negotiation capital on this, at least I hope not.
