They may not be unpaid volunteers, but they are volunteers nonetheless, and I for one appreciate them raising their hands and stepping up.

With as greedy and self-centered this pilot group is, I'm surprised that we don't have a line out the door for these "well paid" union positions. I mean, if you believe what you read on social media, these guys were making close to $500,000 and doing absolutely nothing but lining their pockets. That sounds like a great gig for the blowhards on here who have all the answers. Or could it be that you all know that those jobs are thankless work and the compensation isn't even close to being commensurate with the work they put in or the headaches they had to deal with.

Hey, I can do that too!

From the Cambridge English Dictionary;

volunteer
noun [ C ]
US /ˌvɑː.lənˈtɪr/ UK /ˌvɒl.ənˈtɪər/

B2
a person who does something, especially helping other people, willingly and without being forced or paid to do it:

Now, I don't think of the MEC chair or vice chair as being a military position.

Maybe you can explain how they meet the other requirements of the definition of a volunteer that you posted.

Based on how you are interpreting volunteer, we are all volunteers for FedEx. Its just not an unpaid volunteer position.

Now, if you said that the block reps were volunteers, I would agree.
