I remember as a new hire at my regional jump seating to work and being asked this question. It was like "no kidding"? Meanwhile, I wouldn't be at brand xxx if I had a choice.
After doing that commute for a while and talking to a lot of the crews, I don't think they realized that being directly hired at -insert major carrier here- isn't a thing unless you're coming from the military. And the old stigma that the regionals were just the idiots who couldn't get hired or drunks or whatever blemish that rendered them unhireable.
