You just cancel the flights and strand the passengers for weeks at a time, and force them to buy tickets on other carriers. That isn't a "recovery", it is just continuing the same crappy service that you provided before.
The ‘real airlines’ have been monopolizing the commons for decades with hub and spoke systems and their fortress hubs. And those who would want to fairly compete and give the public a choice at a reasonable price have been largely frozen out by political maneuvering and back door deals. Like in Newark where Southwest GAVE UP their slots, but ‘real airlines’ fought against ULCCs getting them.

So yeah, it’s going to take a few more years - maybe even a few more decades - for ULCCs to work up to the sort of flight frequencies that can make that easy a rescheduling happen. But don’t worry, the ULCCs are getting there, just like happened in Europe.
