And that extra $1k is 8 additional hours on a 717. So a day and a half of pay? Are you going to spend an an extra day and a half away from home by commuting to/from NYC over the course of a month to a higher paying category? Or could you pick up two WS (or 1 GS) 1 day trip where you’re home by dinner (common on the 717 back when I was on it) and make more than that NYC guy?

To all the new guys…welcome. Don’t let the pay chart be the end-all-be-all in your calculus. Do some research and talk to guys who’ve been around. There are ways to make money above the baseline if that’s your motivation. But it’s difficult to increase your QoL from the baseline.

Everyone’s situation is different.
different strokes for different folks. But I would say starting at DL while an very large AE is open definitely makes it a bit less of a gamble. (This was an opportunity unique to the 10/5 and 10/12 class. If you start 10/19 or later the above does not apply to you until they open another AE)

Everyone is different, I flew with a guy who couldn’t even fathom commuting for a month or two and moved because of it (this was at my regional). I’ve flown with those who would do it for a little while but eventually need to move to a base, and yet others commute for 30+ years and seem happy with it. if you fall into the first group and ATL is where you live take the 717, if you feel more like the second or third and want some variety in your flying, going to NYC on the 73 or 320 might make more sense. If you can’t stand red eyes or time zone changes then i would look at the 717 in either base.

good part of this job is we can all find our niche
