Epaulets have their origin in European battle rank. This vestige of colonialism needs to be eliminated. Also the entire question of “rank” needs to be rethought. Do air-people with 4 stripes constantly need to flaunt their superior position on the hierarchy of privilege? It’s time to re-center the narrative and make all uniforms equal, no matter the rank.
Without stripes and a winged brim above my furrowed brow how will the Chipotle folks know how to address me? With four stripes they call me “Captain”, and with three stripes they call me…um…”Captain.”
