I think the cause for appeal is that as you put it, the code was entered in error by the company. If you don't challenge via appeal or via other legal means it will remain on your file. Not sure how long ago this happened but maybe you can contact the CP office if you still know someone there? When Atlas or anyone does a background check it will show up perhaps, whether you are in the right or wrong. Now, it could remain in there and maybe a future employer won't care. That's a risk you will have to take if you don't have it changed to reflect what really happened. Also, how long a gap in employment after you left this company will be looked at. All the best.
