It may seem trivial, but the uniform helps establish our identity as a distinct group, aside from society at large. The public WANTS to believe we are all highly professional (even if we know the occasional lapses occur), and they like to see us appear so.
On an related note, I just got 20 shirts back from the cleaner's and they forgot to crease my sleeves!
Oh, I wear the clip-on, I don't really think anyone can tell unless they can see the clip (they can't on mine), and I wear it because I can remove it easily during pushback.
Why the heck do you need / have 20 shirts?
