The problem I think with negotiating first year pay is you’re giving away a slice of the negotiating pie for free. The company knows they need to attract qualified pilots and they know they’re going to struggle with these rates and need to raise them. I’d be surprised if we don’t see some sort of new hire bonus or incentive before we get a new contract.
And let’s be honest. When deciding where to work most usually look at a lot more than first year pay. They mostly look at the top of the pay scales, they look at the retirement benefits, they start doing the math on what could be over the course of their career. So it all needs to go up or get better.
I think we will see some pretty solid gains across the board on this next contract as the pilot market is pretty insane with the amount of hiring other places are projecting. It’s going to be hard to convince a 20 something to spend the next 40 years here when everyone else is knocking down their door offering better pay and the option to do different types of flying. I’d certainly be looking at other options if I hadn’t upgraded and wasn’t in my 40’s.
