I wish it were true as I was a helo guy but I don’t ever see that happening. As far as United is concerned, you’re still going to need that fixed wing time. I also don’t know how you can credit one category towards another so they’re going to have to change the wording on their application. It still specifically says 1000 hours of airplane time.
FWIW, pure helo guys going to the majors is happening right now, though I don't know about UA. Just read about an army pilot with only pure helo time who went straight to Frontier. Of course, he is a ring knocker with an engineering degree and I think he punched a few tickets on his own dime, but still - it's definitely happening in some 121 outfits.
