For the VA, you have to play up the condition.
For the FAA, you have to play it down.

All true, though everyone keep in mind this is more for mental health issues/ratings. If you have musculoskeletal issues like a slipped disc, tinnitus, sciatica, bad knees, etc., my experience has been that these are fairly objective injuries that you can claim with the VA and FAA and still get a first class in most circumstances. Just remember to get these documented by a doc before you get out because proving service connection with the VA if you wait to make a claim until years after you get out can be challenging to say the least and it's a lot easier if you have proof the injuries occurred while on AD.
