The method is simple: Aways live/spend at one station below your current status.
i.e. If you are a major airline captain, live in a house a major airline FO can comfortably afford. If you're a major airline FO, live in a house a regional captain can swing.
That's the general idea.
Everything else is individual and has too many variables.
