The problem, as you allude to, is how the company defines “abusing sick time”. The reality is guys will show up sick out of FEAR of losing the golden ticket. That’s reality. And frankly, that’s what Mother U wants them to think. Get that mentality in their head early, so when they get to mainline, the behavior is normalized. Heck, they use the same bs for internal interviews. Call is sick a few times? You’re now deemed “unreliable” even though it’s within the UPA and HR reliability metrics.
Add to this things like fear of adding fuel, turning down a plane, or even delayed boarding do to a plane thats way to hit in the summer and you start to see the picture.
