One thing I will add as well: Most of the time, they will put the trip on your schedule well ahead of your duty period, so if it works in your advantage, you can self notify and then you're off the hook until the trip report time. For example, you are on R18 and duty on at 1800. You wake up at 1200 and check your schedule and see you have a trip that starts at 2200. You can now self notify and you have no obligation to the company until 2200. This will make your commute a lot better on day 1.
This is true, just know that your duty time will now start at 2200 and not 1800.
