No worries; easily recognizable arrogance. It does a lot to explain why Putin was able to take control of Crimea in 2014.

This thread is rather myopic and does not examine the current situation from a Soviet point of view. Putin and career Soviet military/KGB were deeply humiliated by the breakup of the Soviet bloc. They have waited until opportunities have presented themselves to regain control of land that was once in the Soviet bloc. In their minds, all former Soviet bloc countries should be in the Russian sphere of influence.
Again, channeling the previous comparisons to WW2, what was done to mother Russia is similar to what was done to Germany after WWI. Rather than place onerous reparations (Treaty of Versailles) on Russia (we bankrupted them anyway), we took away their buffer zone from the west which they used to protect themselves from western aggression. Putin wants the buffer zone back.
Is their desire for a buffer zone unwarranted? Perhaps. How many times have European countries invaded Russia in an attempt to conquer Russia? Hint: more than the two easily remembered events.

Whether Putin's point of view is valid or not is irrelevant. Understanding his point of view is critical.
If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.
