As would anyone else. You're $hitting on a dude who is makes the same choices that reasonable people would, and do, make. Why wouldn't he take the upgrade? The industry can change on a dime (United cancelled its last class during covid with 3 days notice IIRC). It makes sense to progress and contribute where you are until the day you leave.
If the Union was so interested in using his personal business/brand for their gain, why didn't they hire him and compensate him to do so? That's right, He was paying the Union to work on his behalf... he doesn't owe the association anything beyond his dues payment.
