Just calling in sick is simply kicking the can. The problem is it generally takes a major event in a drug addicts life to force them to get help. This pilots career can be salvaged if he is willing to due the work. It would have been easier had he sought help prior or friends had pushed him to get help. It’s not however to late.
If everything is true, his career will not be saved. HIMS saves your career, and there's 1,000 hoops you have to go through continuously to do that. Once you operate a plane under the limit, it's over. Maybe you can find some flight instruction or small part 91 place if your certs don't all get revoked and they don't google your name.
