So if a new hire goes on a LTD during the first year, besides some help from the pilot mutual fund will that pilot be able to receive LTD, and if so is it still 50% ?

You are eligible and it would be 50% of what you had worked so far averaged out as if you worked 12 months. That means your payment will not be very high. Disability starts after you exhaust sick leave. There is also a enhanced disability benefit that accrues over time based on sick leave usage.
