Oh, I think it’s a total act of desperation, though a logical one. Looking at a map, JetBlue is cornered in its current markets, unable to really expand due to slot constraints and being closed in on all sides by competitors. It can’t add enough pilots or aircraft to outpace ULCCs from gobbling up every last remaining leisure route, and Delta is bringing in 321neos to cross the Atlantic on JetBlue’s fledgling routes. Further, Spirit (and Frontier) are massive threats to its prized central and South American flying. Spirit has become a major Central American player in less than a decade. The question I have is will the shareholders agree, and will Frontier make a counter offer? I truly think JetBlue + Spirit would be an excellent combination, if executed properly.
