Crickets. Until covid. Then it bounced right back.

We seem to be in a new paradigm, and the old cycle model doesn't appear to be holding up. What's the new model? Dunno. But ground war in Europe, involving the red army, hasn't brought the house down, at least not yet.
I also highly doubt we will re-experience the lost decade. The regional expansion had a lot to do with mainline not hiring for many years, there is no ability for that to happen in the next decade at a minimum.
