The “golden” day has two main uses. One, as mentioned already, is that if not already used on your last day of reserve, you are automatically released at 1200 prior going into a golden day. The second is they absolutely cannot originally assign you a trip longer than your reserve period if the day following it is “golden”. (This is pretty rare anyway, but is black and white if golden follows a reserve period).

There is a third use of lesser value. If already on a trip, they are supposed to exhaust every other option before rerouting you into a golden day. However, the Crew Trackers can’t “see” golden days in their system, so you have to call them to tell them. In the heat of battle, you may not be able to get ahold of them, or they may not have time to do anything about it. So, yeah…
