Because LC training slots and ability to keep the lance star are highly dependent on the desires of those senior to you, I see several FO’s opt out, then bid a Captain vacancy for one month to ensure control over their training month, and then bid back to FO in their preferred base.
If you aren’t based out west (for example) and you bid a fo vacancy in Oak with the intention of becoming a LC, you might be waiting several months for a training class in a base you don’t really want to be in.
Had a recent captain tell me that if I have captain bids in all the bases and I’m opted in for Lance that it’s possible to be awarded Lance in a base I don’t want. This confused me because I thought that LC was tied to captain bids!
I have captain bids in followed by my current FO status and then my displacement preferences.
