I’m at DAL, not UAL but of course your AIP is of great interest to us. The PSC debate is similar to what you’ll here at the big D. Many argue that commuting is a choice and for many such as myself that is true. My wife and I made the decision to move to the SC coast when our daughter went off to school.
But for many of our pilots the decision was not entirely theirs. MCO, BOS, MSY, DFW, MIA/FLL, CVG and PDX were all DAL pilot bases at one time. No longer.
In addition many of my young FO’s are married to working spouses in professional positions that are the primary breadwinners for their families. It would be much more disruptive for them to find a new job than for their husband/wife to commute.
Many pilots consider bases a major factor in the “which airline” decision. PSC will give a carrier a competitor advantage in recruitment over one that does not. With airlines fighting for and poaching new hires management knows this. They wouldn’t be in the offering if they didn’t.
This is a extremely cyclical industry and unless you are in your last few years it’s a complete crapshoot whether your airline, let alone your base will still exist in 5 years.
PSC is a benefit you just might find yourself in need of someday. Don’t knock it if you can get it in indelible ink.
