I’ve only been involved in two separate OE trips, but on both we flew as a 4 person crew, regardless of the time involved(both were FO OE). The trainee can only sit in the seat if the LCA is in the other seat, So they’ll both go rest at the same time. Once was a scheduled 4 person crew, so we divided up rest breaks normally. 2nd time was supposed to be a 3 person crew, but we flew with 4. We just split the rest into 2 blocks, 2 people rested each time.
So the moral of the story, FO OE, you’re not getting bought off. I think Capt OE is the same, but not positive if they were previously FO qualed?
The biggest driver is whether or not the student has 767 landings or not. If they are doing the short upgrade there is a possibility of being released since they would already have the required landing to be up there without a LCA. However, with the new way of doing TOE a student will only get one crossing (one leg each direction) instead of the 2 crossings previously. Because of this most LCA are keeping all pilots in order to maximize the time with student and to try and cover everything that used to be done with two crossings.
