Old dude here asking for help from someone closer to the new hire process. Turns out a friend of the family has a son that is a pilot for Republic. I'd like to help if I can, but honestly I'm completely out of touch with the current process and don't know what I can do to best help out. Do I simply put in a letter of recommendation? Do I walk his application in personally to my CPO? I really have no idea and am curious to learn.

Like you mentioned, a letter of recommendation or you could work on setting up a Chief Pilot meet and greet for him with your CP.
