Since the OP desires EWR, the 73 would be an extremely quick progression to seniority in the right seat or a very very quick upgrade. Furthermore, a quick progression in seniority would yield the OP some very nice (some all inclusive) layovers that the EWR trips seem to get (UVF, PVR, PUJ, PVR, SJD etc). Lastly the plan is to add 29 Lion Air 737-900s by next summer. (How they are going to staff them is beyond me).
Threats to this plan:
EWR report flying is highly subject to category change. Couple years ago it was nearly all 717. Then 220. Now 73N. Could easily be 320 next. Who knows(Aside from Network).
Contingencies:
If the OP has an extreme desire to fly the 757 the time is now. 321NEO and perhaps the 737 MAX in the future will decimate that fleet. Long time ER pilots in ATL are questioning when the mighty 757 became an MD88. Others have called the 757 the state bird of Florida. NYC7ER is somewhat immune to all that plus the international stuff but for how long who knows.
In Conclusion:
Welcome to Delta OP. You are already making the right moves asking questions. Take all the perspectives in and then make the decision that's best for you. Good luck!
