Making a choice between check airmanships and instructor positions vs line flying is something your logic would justify. Trying to justify flying twice as much for a hundred thousand less makes very little sense and definitely demonstrates why most pilots end up not having nice things. "Working hard" is not a badge of honor unless you're getting paid big money. In any case WGA has proven to be able to survive and grow, and hopefully it thrives... The pilots should be thriving WITH it, rather than allowing the company to do so at their expense. If things take a turn south no company has ever shied away from axing a pilot (or their pay), no matter how hard he worked at an earlier point. This is business, not a flying club.

And it's not a mine is better than yours deal... WGA needs to join the party and it's pilots need to be fairly compensated.
