Commuting from Europe. LOTS of Atlas pilots do this."But I have some questions still if someone could help.
1. Wife and I wish to live in Europe...I understand the Positive space commute to work and hotels provided if you live in the USA does this also apply if you live in Europe (AMS) and hold a 47 base.
after initial training can I live in Europe with the wife and expect to pick up flights in out of Europe or get the guaranteed business commute to base?
Is that commute considered to be on days off ?"

This is complicated, so some of the answers are not entirely correct.
If you have a permanent address in the US, then you have a Gateway (as long as the address is not within 120 miles of your base).
USUALLY travel looks at the cost of the airline trip between your Gateway, and wherever you are scheduled to go. Then they look at the cost of where you want to fly from, to where you are scheduled to go. If the costs are about the same, or the cost of your ticket is less, than the Gateway flight, then they will buy you the ticket from Europe.
If you live in Europe, your Gateway will be XXX (you won't have a Gateway). USUALLY, the use a figure of about $450 to buy your ticket to/from Europe. A LOT of Europe pilots JS (or ID90) to the US somewhere, and then Atlas buys them a ticket from there, to wherever your pattern is starting.
There IS NO GUARANTEED TRAVEL OUTSIDE THE US...but it is OFTEN doable, to get the company to buy you a ticket.
You can also ask to start your pattern outside the US. If this is approved, then the company will buy you a ticket from Europe, to wherever your trip starts. I was just in Spain, and they switched my pattern start from ORD to AMS. They bought me a biz class ticket from Spain to AMS to start.
I think it is easier to get them to buy you a ticket at the end of your pattern, back to Europe. I have had a lot of success with that.
Note: If you have an official address in a remote location in the US, then your Gateway flights will be very expensive, which makes it easier to get Alternate Travel worldwide to start/end your trip. One of our captains lived in Phillipines. He was from, and owned a Lake Cabin, near Bemidji. He was thinking of moving back there, and having BJI as his gateway. It is typically expensive to fly to/from there, making it easier for him to fly overseas.
You NORMALLY commute on days off. BUT, if you get an overseas start, then you would commute on your first day of work.

If you come to Atlas, there is a facebook group Atlas Expats, where you can get A LOT of info on travelling to/from outside the 48 states.
